What is Pilates?

Classical Pilates is a method of exercise and movement designed to stretch, strengthen and balance the body through a series of exercises. Pilates has more than 500 exercises. Each exercise builds upon the other to engage the mind and strengthen and balance the body. The Pilates repertoire emphasizes uniform muscle development so that joints experience balance allowing all of your movement to become more mindful.

Applying Pilates movements therapeutically works to repattern unbalanced or weak muscles. Pilates conditioning strengthens, lengthens and balances musculature around the spine, as it aligns and decompresses injured vertebrae, helping to relieve nerve and disc pressure. This decompression facilitates and stimulates healthy circulation to the damaged spinal tissue.

Pilates also enhance overall flexibility through the neck, shoulders and joints, improving posture, joint health, bone density and refreshes the mind through concentration and deep breathing. Done properly, the Pilates method works from the inside out. Every Pilates exercise is a whole body exercise.
